Featuring northern Germany’s best-preserved medieval center, Lübeck justifies its UNESCO World Heritage listing. The river surrounding the old town connects it to the historically important trade route of the Baltic Sea, which is why it was the capital of the Hanseatic League of merchant guilds for over 500 years.
Warehouses from that time still line the waterfront and are now shops, restaurants and bars. Their step gables, and the Gothic spires that dominate them, are best viewed from boat trips around the island. The tallest spires belong to 14th-century St. Mary’s Church, similar in style to the cathedral of the same era.
However, Lübeck’s icon is the Holstentor, the most impressive remaining city gate which sits on a separate island by a park. This is the first thing most visitors see after arriving at the train station from Lübeck Airport.
The road through the gate leads to a cobbled square housing the porticoed town hall and part of the annual Christmas markets. Other stalls are in Koberg square, overlooked by Saint Jakobi Church and the medieval Holy Spirit Hospital. Nearby are shops selling the famous Niederegger marzipan founded here, and the former houses of Willy Brandt, Günter Grass and Thomas Mann.
The Lübeck accommodations on Booking.com include hotels, apartments and guesthouses, most with parking.
Loved the vibe in Lubeck - plenty to see and do. People seemed friendly and I just wish we could have stayed longer. We travelled to a few cities in this part of Germany over the course of the week, finishing in Hamburg, and Lubeck is the one I always look back on fondly.

The architecture in Lübeck centre is predominantly medieval and coupled with the wide river flowing through it gives a wonderful atmosphere. There are two museums and the church of St. Mary is well worth a visit. Shopping is well catered for and the cafés are excellent, the Weiner Caféhaus in particular. We were slightly wrong-footed by the fact that most shops are closed on Sunday and the cafés don’t open until 11am so breakfast should be taken in the hotel on that day.

We visited Lübeck the week before Christmas to enjoy their Christmas markets. We were not disappointed! Everything was in walking distance. We were there over the weekend, and there was still a lot going on. We enjoyed the café and eateries, as well as all the sites, sounds, smells and tastes of the Christmas markets. (We recommend the Backstore Cafe for delicious breakfasts!) You'll have to sample some marzipan while in Lübeck. It is made there. You can buy marzipan in any supermarket, but you won’t want to miss the delicious cakes at the Niederegger Cafe. There is a small free museum on the top floor of the Niederegger Cafe. Be sure to visit it. The view of the market from there was also beautiful. The people of Lübeck were very friendly. Lübeck is a hidden gem in Northern Germany. Definitely worth checking out.

Lubeck is an amazing city full of charm and wonder!
Lubeck is an amazing city full of charm and wonder! In order to do everything a 2-3 day trip would have been great, but we managed to do quite a bit in just one day. I would definitely recommend the churches, Holstentor, and the Town Hall guided tour. Perfect food options too, with a diverse range of culinary delights. Once you are in the old town, nice and easy to get around on foot. I'd probably avoid going during the Christmas markets again though.

Very beautiful city .
Very beautiful city . You can walk around the old part of the city for a very long time. Beautiful views of the river. The Baltic Sea is a 30-minute drive away. For breakfast I recommend Cafebar Hüxstraße. but it is better to book a table in advance, it is a very popular place. Delicious ! The bus leaves there from the center. Highly recommend. I definitely want to come to this city again.

The medical historical city centre is incredibly well preserved. The skyline of Luebeck is characterised by 7 church towers. The European HANSE Museum is state-of-the-art build above an archeological site. The river TRAVE links the city and the seaside resort of TRAVEMUENDE where passenger boats are scheduled during summer season to run to the Baltic Sea and back three times a day. During high season it can get crowded because it's a popular destination for holidays and weekend outings.
Restaurants of many cuisines are all over town. Seafood is readily available, of course.
Public transport is easily accessible.
We stayed in IV Jahreszeiten in Lubeck, even though we booked the room in Viva Hotel.
We enjoyed our stay in IV Jahreszeiten Hotel, overall facility is good-with restaurant, spa and wellness center and elevator. Room is spacious and lighting is well designed. Bathroom is new and clean.
Having kettle in the room for a cup of coffee or tea was a big advantage for us after long day.
Hotel is not located in the city center, but bus station is close (Nr.:1,7,10), and it takes 10 min. to reach the city center by bus.
Babette Apartments are perfectly located near the Rathaus, on a great street with cafes and stores. The apartment we stayed in had a well appointed kitchen (really, every kitchen appliance you could need and lovely dishes, too). Our rental one bedroom was very spacious and nicely decorated . The renovated bathroom was beautifully designed and the shower was great. We loved the comfort and convenience of the Babette Apartments, and will absolutely stay there next time we visit Lubeck.
Friendly welcome on arrival. An excellent small hotel, located close to railway station and within walking distance of beautiful Lubeck old town. Quiet room was requested and this was provided overlooking garden. Breakfasts were very good indeed, with much attention to guest health (Covid protocols). Staff very friendly and welcoming.
Small historical building in the downtown. Very nice, clean, a tangible "genius loci". Ideal location if you want to explore Lübeck. Helpful staff, good breakfast. Paid parking ca. 200m from the hotel. We would recommend that you discuss where your room is exactly located as there are three floors and not any lift in the hotel.
The hotel is situated right next to the Holstentor, so within walking distance you can easily cover the old city of Lubeck. The room was quite spacious too and well equipped, the beds were comfy but aside from this I can't say there's more to add since we didn't spend so much time in the room anyway.
one night stay in the City, great location, modern and clean rooms, pillow selection and good breakfast. We parked in the garage parking house next to the hotel (as hotel parking was full) even thou Parking house was closed on Sundays; hotel staff had access and was no issue at all to depart
The rooms were huge and more than I expected. We even had a separate room for a small kitchen-dining area.
The furniture and artwork around the hotel were high quality, colonial style.
The access to both Lubeck and Travemunde is ideal.
Great Location, near to HBF and Old Town.
Spacious and clean Apartment.
The kitchen has all we need for long stay in Lubeck.
The owner very helpful and easy to reach.
Will definitely stay again if visiting Lubeck
Trendy hotel with refreshing interiors. Good size room, open concept wardrobe, boardgames for some good fun, loves the zesty aroma shower gel. Location is conveniently at the entrance of the Lubeck HBF.
Incredible location, every cultural venue close to the hotel. The hotel's architecture was amazing, room was clean and nice, the breakfast tasty and the staff polite and helpful. Totally recommended.
Hotel is very well located, close to the center of Lübeck with a nice view over the river and with a few restaurants close by. The facilities are well kept and the building is very charming.
Location. Newly renovated apartment with studio kitchen was small but wonderful. Good Value. Breakfast was outstanding at nearby hotel owned and managed by same organization.
