Read moreThe best time to visit Brazil is from September to October. This lets you avoid the busiest holiday periods, the harsh winters in the south, and the peak of the wet season. Brazil’s warmest months are also its wettest, so it’s generally best to avoid the high season between December and March, particularly if you’re planning on wildlife watching in the Amazon or the Pantanal, which are best visited between July and September. Rio’s world-famous Carnaval takes place in February or early March, and it’s without a doubt one of the most unforgettable parties you can attend. If you’re into windsurfing or kiteboarding, a trip to São Miguel do Gostoso, Taiba, or Cumbuco offer great conditions between May and February.

Monthly weather and travel tips for Brazil

The maritime procession in Angra dos Reis onJanuary 1st is a great way to see in the new year, as thousands of boats parade along the water. Crowd levels peak in February, but if you’re content to jostle, you’ll be able to attend one of the best parties on the planet. The weather remains hot and rainy with scorching temperatures of up to 95ºF, so pack light layers and waterproofs.
Carnivals are held in lots of major cities like São Paulo and Salvador, but the most famous of all takes place in Rio de Janeiro. The event takes place in February or early March for the 5 days before Ash Wednesday. It’s still high season in most of Brazil as temperatures continue to hover around 100°F. Carnival celebrations may still be occurring in major cities if Ash Wednesday falls in March, so be prepared for extra crowds if so. If the latter celebration isn’t happening, this month can be more pleasant if you just want to explore different parts of the country, but the possibility of summer storms means you’ll want to pack waterproofs and a good umbrella along with light layers.
The annual Brazilian Beer Festival takes place in Blumenau every March over 4 days, with local and international breweries offering you the chance to try over 140 types of beer. If there are no carnival crowds around, head to São Paulo to treat your palate to some of the best food in the country or soak up some of the over 2,400 miles of shoreline which includes wonderful spots like Alter do Chao in Pará or the volcanic archipelago of Fernando de Noronha.

As temperatures and crowd numbers begin to drop, April can be a very pleasant month to visit many parts of Brazil. The Pantanal enters its dry season towards the end of the month, and Holy Week brings a number of religious celebrations, as well as a chance to try some homemade chocolate eggs. Heavy rain tends to continue in most regions and temperatures average between 65–85ºF.
While Holy Week festivities take place across the country, the celebrations in Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais are some of the most notable, as the city covers itself in flowers and colorful carpets laid on the streets. Other popular Holy Week events are found in Cidade de Goiás, Congonhas, and São João del Rei. Lollapalooza Brasil usually takes place on the first weekend of April in São Paulo and gives you the chance to catch the biggest names in rock, hip hop, and electronic music over three days.

This period between the rainy season (February to April) and the hot, dry season (September to November) is a good time to explore the Amazon, when you have the best opportunities for boat trips and hiking in pleasant weather.
The celebrations of Carnival and Holy Week may have passed, but there’s still plenty of events taking place in Brazil. São Paulo hosts Virada Cultural Paulistana – the biggest 24-hour festival in the world. Not only is it free to get in, but you’ll be able to attend various events around the city such as live music performances and films. The coastal town of Torres is also worth visiting for its annual International Ballooning Festival. Along with lots of hot-air enthusiasts, it’s also home to concerts, films, and extreme sports like skydiving.

July is Brazil’s coldest month, so no matter which part of the country you visit it’s best to bring a warm coat for the evening. Average temperatures fall between 53 and 82ºF, still warm enough to enjoy the beaches of Rio in the southeast, the tropical wetlands of the Pantanal, and the Amazon rainforest. School holidays last for practically the entire month so expect most attractions to be busier than usual.
Despite the cooler weather, Brazil keeps the spirit of summer alive with a variety of fun events, such as the Campos do Jordão Winter Festival which features a whole month of live performances. There’s also FLIP (Festa Literária Internacional de Paraty) between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, where literary lovers can attend workshops, lectures, and debates. Mountain regions are most popular at this time, as locals enjoy indoor skiing, hiking,or sightseeing in places such as the Serra Gaúcha and the hills of Rio.

Comfortable temperatures and minimal rainfall make August one of the best times to visit Brazil. You might want to consider exploring the Pantanal where you have a good chance of spotting jaguars basking on the banks of lakes and rivers. Daytime temperatures tend to be around the mid 70s but can fall drastically in the evening so be sure to bring a good coat.
The southern town of Gramado holds its annual international film festival in August, when the best offerings of Brazilian and other Latin American films of the year are showcased over 9 days. In the midwest, the week-long Bananada music festival takes place in Goiânia, transforming the town into a hub of alternative music, culture, food, and even skateboarding championships.

The biggest bands take to the stage, with past headliners including Elton John, Guns N’Roses, and Rihanna. To soak up some early spring colors, head to the charming city of Holambra – the largest producer of flowers and ornamental plants in Latin America. Oktoberfest comes to many of Brazil’s cities in a big way, particularly in Blumenau where a big parade leads into over two weeks of beer drinking and folk music – the second-biggest celebration after the original Munich festival. By the mouth of the Amazon River, Belém's Círio de Nazaré parade centers around a small statue of Nossa Senhora de Nazaré (Our Lady of Nazareth), which is carried past millions of pilgrims on a flower-filled carriage. There’s still plenty to see and do in Brazil.

Christmas and warm weather mean December is a busy month in Brazil. Average temperatures tend to be between 66º and 95ºF, but the return of the wet season sees rainfall across much of the country.

Known as Carnatal, it brings together crowds who dance through streets alongside trucks equipped with giant sound systems, known as trios elétricos. The Comic Con Experience arrives in São Paulo for 3 days in December, full of exhibitions and artists related to the biggest comics, TV series, films, and video games. As Christmas nears, cities are decorated in beautiful lights, but few more so than Gramado during its Natal Luz festival. You’ll also be able to enjoy a lakeside concert full of entertainers and dazzling special effects. To ring in the new year in style, join millions of white-clad partygoers on Copacabana Beach in Rio on December 31st for an incredible fireworks display and lots of live music.

Brazil’s summer takes place between December and March, with the heat becoming more intense the farther north you go. If you’re looking to enjoy hiking and sightseeing in major cities like Rio during the cooler period between May and September offer better conditions. In the shoulder periods of April and October, expect it to be chilly in the south with dry and warmer weather along the coastal areas farther north. To avoid the harsh winters in the south and the peak of the wet season, plan your trip between September and October.

Botucatu is a very friendly, safe city. The weather is mild, beautiful, a lot of options for eating, fresh&healthy choices, outside exercise places, great for walking. I was born in Botucatu but live in the USA for many years, I love going to Botucatu at least once a year.
Beautiful historical town with excellent dining and cute shops however book a boat / jeep to see the best beaches / waterfalls.
Brasília is a nice city, modern and large avenues. There are a lot of restaurants and beautiful architecture and monuments. The only thing that I avoid is the dry climate.
São Paulo can be compared to New York the city never sleeps. Great night life, parks, food and people.
It’s a must see for any visitor or even Brazilian. A beautiful town with a historic center. The city has various nice restaurants (but usually quite pricy) and shops. Since it’s not in the mountains, it’s easier to visit than for example ouro preto.
This was once in a lifetime kind of thing. It is massive, much larger than Niagara. The decks they built to see the falls up-close is exceptional. We visited both sides of the falls. If you have one day you can hire a private taxi and do both sides in one day. The boat ride is expensive, but it is worth the money.
Love it to the bones! The most lively city I know, it's addictive! I have been there dozens of times and there is still a lot to explore. You need to be careful, street smart and act as a local, but if you can do so, you can have a lot of fun.
there is a buffet for the evening if you missed dinner outside of hotel
Good restaurants, shops open during extended hours, beautiful places to visit. Traffic is somewhat chaotic.
Wonderful city with amazing street art, Great concert venues, record stores, natural beauty, museums , beautiful beaches, great restaurants and snack bars and fantastic cocktails on Ipanema beach.
One of the most beautiful places in the world. Brasil is fantastic with wonderful music, food and warm and friendly people.
Personally prefer to stay there instead of across the bay in Rio and I recommend taking the ferry instead of driving across the damn bridge. Icarai very walkable and no shortage of restaurants. As in most big cities - situationsl awareness at all times. P.S. the majority of Uber drivers (and often taxis) have big natural gas tanks in the trunks of their cars - may be good for the environment but will suck if you have a suitcase or two.
Recife is a large city with a huge cultural vibe. Although known for its beautiful sights, the city culture is incredible and the people warm.
Belo Horizonte is a large city, with heavy traffic in some areas at certain times. However, there are also very pleasant and beautiful places right downtown, as well as many good restaurants and museums. Furthermore, small towns with beautiful historical buildings, such as Sabará, Caeté, and Santa Luzia, are reachable within 30-40 km. During my short 4-day stay, everything went perfectly, and I would love to return for further exploration.
Amazing city with waterfalls, canyons, boat cruises, trails and great food!
A Praia Brava é o point do momento.
João Pessoa lives in my ❤️.. I love this city is beautiful, awesome if you are looking for a place to relax and enjoy quiet time in sunshine ☀️..
Cosmopolitan city with an infinite amount of options. Amazing for cultural activities as well as sports. The gastronomy is unbeatable!
The access road can be a little tricky! It's a dirt road (unpaved). There is very little indication where the access road is! Google Maps is of no use! But Igatu is absolutely charming! If you want a place to relax, Igatu is just perfect! There are several hiking trails!
Beautiful city. You can see key tourists sites in six days. anything after that you can spend a few days on Copacabana Beach. The waves are larger and the beach is deeper than Ipanema Beach.
Great shopping and excellent food on the Uruguayan side of the city!
Very nice island, the further you go from the center the nicer. I stayed close to the boat because I had no car, but there are buses that can take you a bit further so I would recommend staying further away from the center. I didn't find many options to go to secluded beaches, only organized trip by travel agencies and not all were available probably because it was not summer season.
An iconic destination on the world tourism stage, Rio for a few days was definitely not enough. I look forward to returning and my few days in this city are the trigger for that ambition to return. It is vibrant, panoramically stunning and everything from the harsh reality of favelas to the opulent wealth of religion with towering cathedrals and icons is on open display.
Walk around is great. Too many nice spots to visit and try. Very nice people and quite safe city.
It's a huge city and tourism has not recovered to pre-epidemic levels. The grates, tall walls, electric fences and graffiti alert you to potential trouble. The beaches are fabulous and the night life active, but tourists should take common sense precautions. The evening artisan fair on the city beach is a must visit.
Rio is one of the most beautiful and charming city in the world! The food is amazing good. You can eat so many variety of different dishes, super yummy, and food from many countries like Lebanese, Greek, American, etc.
Gramado has many options to visit for the whole family.
We were for climb crak but it was really sunny wall
Great city. Very diverse with amazing people, sites, and food. A month was not enough for me, so I will return.
We wish local restaurants would pay for choro (sp) or other Brazilian specialty musicians to perform instead of having a standard loud guitar player we could have heard in the USA.
Most incredible place I have ever been. The most vacation-y vacation. Incredible for enjoying marine life and amazing beaches free from loud music and crowds. I saw whales, dolphins, sharks, manta rays, tortoises, and fish. Soft sands and emeralds waters. Incredible. I can't imagine that better beaches exist in the world.
An amazing city. Good food, good drinks, breathtaking views, nice people and nice weather. Not safe, tho.
I think 2 more nights would have been great. I stayed only 2 and we missed the beaches, the nigh life at Rio Vermeglio, the dinner/dance show at the Ballet Folklorico of Salvador and a visit to the Morro de Sao Paulo. It is very hard to get tickets to the show and they are on stage only 3 days a week.
Amazing city, so much to do and see- or just relax. Music, food, cultural events, friendly people- its unbeatable. I go often.
I love the city attractions, parks, restaurants, hotels! Been there 4 times already!
Perfect for a three day weekend. You can see all the wonderful garden places in town and the cute village of Holombra only minutes away. The pol was delightful and the restaurant excellent, both food and service. Really just one of the most pleasant hotel experiences this year.
Beaches: Water temperature was perfect. Waves a bit strong; one just needs to learn how to deal with them. Attractions: Cristo Redentor and Pan de Azucar: Both well worth the time and money. Senior discounts of 50% (60 and over) made attractions much more doable. And: an "acompanante" also gets in for half price! Uber service is very inexpensive compared to the U.S. Drivers are very courteous, and many speak some English or Spanish. Most arrived in 3 -4 minutes.
Love the food and the beautiful city. The rush hour traffic could be a bit annoying.
Big city vibes, but with some nice parks and green areas and also the river that give a bit of alternative scenery. Some nice small museums, the beaches are nothing special, ask locals to show you spots for the evening/night.
é uma cidade rustica. Ótimos passeios. A cidade é para fazer passeios e descansar
loved the views from our corner balcony and rooftop
People give it a bit more hype than it appears to be. Nice place, Copacabana could have been a little cleaner, the smell of urine was very much present on the streets. Brazilians are very nice and helpful.
Great town, but I wouldn't recommend it to older folks or anyone with mobility issues. Many hills and beaches that are only accessible after going down (and then up) huge stairs. It's also very expensive, so be prepared to spend a lot for every little thing, from water to meals. It's a great destination for people who like nature, water sports, and hiking. Also great for folks interested in the party and dating scene.
Salvador is city with lot of beaches and places to visit. Try to visit out of weekends and enjoy the sun e places to visit
We traveled as a family, focusing on travel with local tour guides and uber. We listened to recommendations from local hotel staff as to how to safely travel as tourists, and had no issues. Between the yummy local restaurants, tourist beaches at Ipanema and Copacabana and quieter beaches a short ride away, museums downtown and beautiful sites accessible easily via local tour guides, 5 days wasn't enough. Rio is on our list of places to come back to.
So. Beautiful lguassa falls incredible both side agantina and brazil side
Lugar maravilhoso.
A small and cozy place, it won't take a whole day to walk all the streets. But it has a nice atmosphere, and colourfull colonial style houses. Plenty of restaurants of different style and categories. Access is fine, steep roads, as this is a mountainous area.
Rio is a fun city, very affordable for drinks, and food. All our friends told us to be careful of the brazen robbery so we were very careful but in Copacabana and Ipanema, there were police at every corner so we felt very safe. The place is clean, language is a big problem if you don't know Portuguese (Google Translate is your friend), and Uber is easy to get although trunk space for most are less as all cars have a natural gas cylinder in the trunk.
Stunning. The natural scenery is beautiful. Rio is awesome. Amazing food. Nice people.
Wonderful city, a gateway to the Amazon forest. Very busy, colorful and vibrant. Hot and humid. Opera house is impressive. Great to visit to experience the local culture and ife.
I liked Rio it has lots to do and see. The people were friendly and the dining was affordable.
Recomendo
