Staying at this Atishika Bay beach house was perhaps one of our favourite stays in two weeks of touring the Kii Pennisula by car. We stayed for one night during the downtime season (March) while things were quieter, and that suited our temperament having just toured the Kumano Kodo Senzan. The owner's concept of this dwelling is to provide a simple and humble beachside retreat in which guests can while the days in relaxed manner. The house has everything provided for, and there are thoughtful personal touches: fresh orange juice from the owner's orchid; a list of recommended places to eat, places to walk the Kumano Kodo Isije route, and other nearby attractions; and books and art adding character to the rooms. The charm is in its very local, low-key, unpretentious, and community feeling.

Located within 28 km of Ise Grand Shrine and 29 km of Oharai-machi, LOG HOUSE at Shima provides rooms with air conditioning and a private bathroom in Shima. Great location -- overlooking a little harbor in a small fishing town. We were there in the winter, but had good luck with sunny weather and enjoyed exploring the village. We chanced on the annual Shimenawa ceremony at the Anori-jinga shrine, which brought many of residents of the town together. The house itself is very comfortable, with an open living room and a nice upstairs sleeping space with comfy futons. Fabulous deep tub, with a view. It felt wonderful to have a whole cabin to ourselves. We had a hard time finding the address, but the hosts (although not on site) were extremely quick to help us via Booking messages.

Located right by Chidorigahama Beach and featuring indoor/outdoor hot-spring baths, Resort Hills Toyohama Soranokaze offers Japanese and Western-style accommodations. The staff were very kind and knowledgeable. I wanted to go to the Yokohama Observatory (which is expensive and hard to reach by public transpo), but they offered a shuttle ride to a train station, and also told me about Shima City tourism’s taxi promo. Very helpful! Other than that, the room was bigger than expected. It had a small Japanese garden, which was a good touch. They also had a lot of fun facilities in the lobby.

Absolutely beautiful resort on the top of a hill. Amazing ocean views. Tons of stuff for kids like ping pong, games room, even karaoke. Be sure to sit on the open air patio for the ashi-no-yu foot bath. Nice yukatas to wear when you go to onsen. Excellent variety at breakfast buffet. We stayed here after visiting Ise Jingu
