I didn’t really like anything. The front desk made me carry my bag up 4 flights of stairs. The room was so hot when I got inside. There was no coffee in the rooms at all and I asked multiple time for it. The shower was also clogged.

San Jose as city is not too much to believe as other cities and is a crowded city We stayed at the outside skirts of San Jose where you have more nature, mountains/scenery and less city life and visited the city several times.

If you like a big city, San Jose is great.
If you like a big city, San Jose is great. We live in southern Costa Rica and only go to San Jose for doctor visits and shopping. It's best to take a taxi or Uber in San Jose. The traffic is crazy. Be sure to use the WAZE app instead of Google for driving around. It stays more up to date.

I did a tour for the first two weeks of the volcano area, rain forest, Caribbean, and then the Pacific side of the island. During the tour, we also ziplined, rode horseback, white water rafting, soaked in hot springs, and hiked the rain forest and volcano areas.
When the tour ended I stayed for another 10 days in downtown San Jose and did day trips out of the apartment.

We stayed here on our last night but wished we hadn't.
We stayed here on our last night but wished we hadn't. The hotel was good but there was nothing special about the city and we would have preferred to be back in Alajuela where we stayed on the first night. There was much less traffic there and lots of different birds in the trees. The park in San Jose only had grackles.

There is plenty to do in San Jose and the surrounding area.
There is plenty to do in San Jose and the surrounding area. Three places to recommend: the Jade Museum, the Post Office Museum and Lankester Botanical Garden on the road to Paraiso. The Jade Museum is a revelation - it is in a new building and has a wonderful exhibition about the Pre-Colombian inhabitants of Central America. Don't be put off by its title - it is not a museum of dusty cabinets full of jade objects. Just to the right of the entrance to the Central Post Office is a museum with displays of various themes - space, calypso, biodiversity - illustrated with stamps from all over the world. The Lankester Gardens is a gem. It's a centre for the study of orchids so visit at the right time of year, e.g. March, when many are in flower. The gardens are beautifully laid out and very well cared for.
I stayed at Hostel Shakti for one night while passing through San Jose. I did leave early in the morning so did not experience Breakfast. Shakti was a very nice hostel. Very clean and super cute. It had very good access to the downtown merchants and food places. Later at night the merchants and restaurants around the hostel did close so you should know to get dinner before you come back to the hostel it is later. There was a wonderful porch terrace at the hostel and I enjoyed speaking with fellow travelers there.
All meals I had at the hotel were great, but I do have to give a shoutout to their breakfast because it was awesome! The Staff was super friendly and diligent with any need we had. It is also worth to mention that the art around the hotel gives it a very special touch.
The location was very convenient since it is close to most urban areas of San Jose (even urban areas in Heredia and Alajuela) and it was surrounded with several shopping centers and plazas with restaurants, pharmacies, convenience stores, etc.
This is a lovely authentic old colonial family house converted to a hotel..It's excellent value for money. The staff & owner are very friendly & go out of their way for their clients. The breakfast is light & very nice. The hotel is very close to lots of lovely outdoor restaurants & coffee shops in Escalante, one of the best areas in downtown San Jose, so it's worth checking out. All in all, this hotel is excellent value & we will certainly book it again upon our return.
The only proper modern hotel in our stay in Costa Rica, modelled on the Western standards. Large room with a huge bed, table, chest of drawers, closet with iron and board, spacious bathroom with a powerfull shower - all in a good state. The buffet style breakfast was varied and tasty. Central pool looked big - although we didn't use it.
There's an area with several restaurans nearby and hotel provides free shuttles to the aiport which was handy.
The location is great – in a quiet residential area, but within walking distance to lots of lovely bars and restaurants and also into downtown San Jose.
All the facilities within the apartment, with spotlessly, clean, modern and comfortable.
The front desk staff were helpful and friendly and the extra amenities, such as the laundry and rooftop hot tub were brilliant! we would definitely stay again.
I highly recommend this place. The hotel is super clean and well equipped. The location is great, the staff is very friendly and helpful and the cafe/restaurant/pub downstairs is super nice. The area is safe, the street is well illuminated and next to it there is the Mexican Embassy with a security guard present at night. This will become my go to place when I'm back in San Jose.
It's in downtown San Jose so it's close to great food and transportation. The staff went over and beyond to help me so much I booked 2 more nights. Across the street from the jade museum, this oasis always had a soft breeze blowing in with beautiful plants hanging around. Comfortable beds with hot water!!
I can’t say enough good things about this hotel! The hospitality was absolutely amazing - the concierges, parking attendant, housekeepers, and restaurant staff were so kind and helpful. Great location, price, and breakfast. I would 100% recommend staying here if you’re traveling to the San Jose area!
Cute hotel in a heritage building just outside the central district of San Jose. Super friendly and helpful staff, comfortable rooms, great location. The cafe/breakfast area is beautiful and there is a fantastic restaurant attached to the hotel. Great option for a night or two in San Jose!
Excellent location downtown San Jose for Museum, Architecture, live musicians & artisans merhcants displaying their work on the brick stone walkway. Very very convenient to markets, an array of freshly prepared ethnic food sites everywhere, fresh fruits & spices.
Great location.
Great Hotel with super prices! I stayed there a few nights...Payed the same I sometimes do for hostel dorms but had a very good, clean private room. Location is 5 minutes walk from downtown area and the people are nice and helpful
This is a very centrally-located hotel, right at the heart of downtown San Jose. The staff at the front desk were exceptionally friendly and helpful. The breakfast choices were delicious. The facility is clean.
What a gem of hotel in San Jose.
Good Food, Clean Room, generally clean premises and a good pool for a dip after a busy 10 days around costa rica. Only stayed 1 night but would be ideal for a short city break.
I have been staying in Hotel Balmoral since the 1980’s, and since have stayed on several occasions since over the years. It’s in a great location downtown San Jose and the staff are welcoming and friendly.
.Always the close proximity to the Tracopa Bus Station, of which I enjoy walking to & from whenever staying at the Radisson. The hotel is also in walking distance to downtown San Jose..
