Two months later and I still remember this retreat as my favorite place I stayed in NZ. The owner, Ian, is exceptionally kind and friendly. He really tries to facilitate friendships between the guests, and gives great advice for the Tongariro crossing as well as other activities in the area. Overall the place has a genuine, easygoing, and social atmosphere that (imo) is not commonly found. I extended my stay here and could have stayed longer!

Beautiful stay with the most gracious hosts. Jason was so helpful as we navigated the area and prepared to hike the Tongariro Crossing. The room was beautiful, quiet, clean, and comfy. The wooden spa in the beautiful garden offered the perfect relief after our epic hike. Great breakfasts and conversation with our hosts. They just couldn't do more for us! Sadly, we were not able to take advantage of the world-famous fishing, but hope to get back to the area one day.

We really enjoyed our stay at Creel Lodge. The room was very nice and clean, we had separate bedrooms, living area and kitchen, and porch. If you walk to the back of the property there is a private gate that leads to a nice walk by the river. The lodge is also close enough to take a short walk into the main town area where there is a grocery store and restaurants. I would recommend staying here and would stay here again.

Breakfast was excellent. Associated with the Hare and Copper, which is an amazing restaurant, in our opinion. Hosts were very friendly, with a little guidebook to attractions in the area. They also help with advice and bookings for local activities. One of the best places we've ever stayed.

Turangi has many interesting outdoor activities, and it is in the central North Island with mountains, rivers, Lake Taupo nearby, but we were just passing through and for us it was a place to break the long journey, rather than a destination in itself.

It's a great stopover location say between Auckland and Wellington but it's hard to find good food and the prices e.g. food and petrol reflect a lack of true competition and a feeling "well, you've got little choice"

A comfortable apartment with great views over Lake Taupo.
A comfortable apartment with great views over Lake Taupo. We stayed two nights and used it as our base for doing the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, so it was perfect for that. Oreti Resort is about 14km from Turangi, so you definitely need a car for eating out etc.

We found plenty to do in our 3 day stay.
We found plenty to do in our 3 day stay. We popped up to Taupo and went to Orakei korako. Then to beautiful lake Rotopounamu and walked around that. And did the picturesque river walk. We hired a rental car so we could look around easily. We could have easily filled in a whole week.

Central to some wonderful activities such as great rafting, the walk Tongariro crossing, Ruapehu. 'Up market' accommodation is very limited but if you can get into the Tongariro Lodge, it is excellent. Worth the extra cost. The locals are helpful and the town has a nice relaxed non-touristy feel; however avoid leaving your car parked overnight on a street. Shopping, apart from Groceries is limited.

Turangi is a lovely little town.
Turangi is a lovely little town. Not much going on in the actual town itself but has everything you need in terms of supermarkets etc. and easy access to the Tongariro Crossing and lots of other beautiful walks nearby. Recommend the Tongariro River Walk and Lake Rotopounamu walk too. Lovely swimming spots! I stayed for 4 nights in the end which was great. Recommend staying here! And also use Panda Shuttles to get to the Tongariro crossing or anywhere in the local area. Stay at Riverstone Lodge if you can!
The location was great with an amazing view of the lake and just what my wife and I needed on our honeymoon. It was great as a jumping off point to visit the surrounding areas like Lake Taupo itself and Tongariro National Park as we visited various Lord of the Rings filming locations surrounding and on the volcanoes. The room was clean and very spacious, with one of the largest bathrooms in our three week's staying all across New Zealand.
Wonderful Backpacker/Lodge. The Host/Owner is friendly, helpful and operates a first-class facility. Location was great -- short walk to grocery store, pubs, and restaurants. The accomodations (I had room with Queen bed and shower/think was very comfortable. The Host's interaction with guest also seemed to get other guests to interact more and spend little less time on their phones
Lovely little hotel - old but the rooms were nicely refinished. Had a very friendly welcome by the owner and a relaxing stay overnight, the bed was very comfortable. The hot pools out the back would have been great but we decided not to use them as it was pouring rain at the time.
Lovely spacious room.Good water flow with shower.Lovely comfortable chairs to sit at the table.Good kitchen facilities all working well.A heat pump available for chilly nights.Very good lighting both inside and outside.Motel is handy to Turangi shopping centre.
This place has everything for children and adults🙂 staff are really lovely, lots of fun things to do with the kids. They loved the friendly goats 🐐 at the back.
We ended up booking another 2nights here so all up 4 nights 🤗
Thank You Tokaanu Lodge Motel ✌
The apartment unit was spacious and super clean. The price was super competitive. I got delayed for check-in and the hosts left clear after hours check in instructions for me.
Would love to stay at the property again whenever I am back in New Zealand.
We stayed two nights here during school holiday. The room is very clean and super comfy. I will rank it on the top B&B in Turangi with a very reasonable price. Luckily, we may be the first guest to use the new cedar hot tub. Highly recommended.
been coming here for years on fishing trips and only stay elsewhere if the Lodge is already full. Facilities are excellent and location is perfect with the river outside the back gate and an excellent tackle/shop outside the front.
Lovely location, remote enough to feel immersed in nature but a short drive to either Taupo or Turangi to do all tourist activities. Cabin was clean, warm and cozy . Has all the basics for a simple lifestyle
Stunning views overlooking Lake Taupo
from an expansive balcony. Great place for breakfasts and dinners, with a skyline that changed every hour depending on the weather, the sun and the clouds.
The location is superb. The hot pools came in handy after a cold day in the ice and more importantly the children playground and the animal zoo were really a plus for a family friendly hotel.
Great location, close to Turangi shops and not far from Taupo city centre.. enjoyed our stay, Tony is friendly, funny, and a great down to earth host.. definitely a place to recommend 👌
