Guesthouse En is a holiday home situated in Maki, Shiga. The nearest station is JR Omi-Hachiman Station, located a 12-minute drive away. A microwave and a toaster can be found in the kitchen. Guesthouse En is a beautiful rural getaway. The house was large compared with the many small hotel rooms we stayed in during our stay and it was so lovely to stay somewhere that had genuine Japanese atmosphere, but that also catered to western tourists (e.g. the bath/shower is suitable for both western and Japanese travellers). We also appreciated the little extra touches like an automatic heater in the toilet and decent coffee bags. The bikes were great to get us to and from town, and Hiroshi was also very generous to take us to and from the station for a day trip to Kyoto. Would recommend to anyone who wants to get out of town and experience Japan a little more slowly.

We booked this property with a bit of hesitation as there were very few reviews on booking.com and we didn’t regret it a second! It is in a very peaceful residential area, quiet, restful night’s sleep is guaranteed which was very important to us. The house is warm and cosy as we had a bit of a cold weather it was important. We felt at home and had a great base to explore the city of Kyoto, Otsu and all the surrounding area. There’s everything you would need in a household and more. There’s also a nice garden which we couldn’t use due to the cold weather. The owner is a very sweet attentive lady and a great host who took care of every single need of us, so that we felt like staying in a friend’s house. With or without car this accommodation is a great choice to escape the crowds of Kyoto and yet be in 25 min distance to downtown Kyoto. We stayed there for 10 days and explored the whole area. I cannot recommend Sayo’s place enough! I would love to come again sometime.
