FAQs about hotels in Shanghai

A Beacon of Modern China

A beacon of 21st-century China, Shanghai is modernising at an electrifying rate. Nowhere is this more evident than the skyscraper-punctuated Pudong commercial district. The most distinct - the Oriental Pearl Tower - has a ball at the top and bottom and offers fabulous city views. A number of towers also twist as they go up – a feat of contemporary engineering.

This side of the city also houses Shanghai Pudong International Airport, while Shanghai Hongqiao Airport is over the Huangpu River in the Puxi district. An area of older and less dominating buildings, Puxi features the elegant Bund area whose varied architecture includes a surprising array of Art Deco.

With a choice of shopping centres and small shops beneath brightly lit neon signs just like Chinatowns across the world, Shanghai shopping is fantastic.

Other must-see Shanghai attractions include the wonderful Shanghai Museum and the Jade Buddha Temple. For a break from the hustle and bustle head to the Yuyuan Gardens, the beach or peaceful Zhujiajiao Water Town in the west.

Whether you choose one of the Shanghai hotels, apartments or hostels, take time to go to a tea house, a Chinese institution. Also worth sampling are Shanghai hairy crab, steamed dumplings and the freshwater fish so popular with locals.

Exciting, vibrant, safe, advance and modern city - the roads and streets are clean. Public transportation is efficient and fast. Food is good, many eating places. A little downside though, allow me to be candid, to some small extend, economic success of this place may have overrun the personal etiquette of the public members at large, especially the older generation (by observation) - the way they drive, smoke, jumping queue, and spitting in public. Notwithstanding, the people are generally not unfriendly and will be helpful when asked.

Perfect introduction to first time traveller to China.

Perfect introduction to first time traveller to China. Transport into Shanghai from Airport Catch Maglev fast train and/or Metro from the airport. Signage clear and buying a ticket very easy with Alipay which you can preload before arrival in China (in NZ anyway). Always a person to help near where tickets are bought. BUT beware Maglev around 9:30 and metro 11pm, then only bus or taxi and bus difficult to workout without language. Stay near the Bund - perfect spot for people watching on the weekend. Walking around Shanghai safe and fascinating, metro very easy to navigate and although language a challenge everyone very helpful and good humoured. Nanjing Road amazing, especially at night, even for someone who doesn't like shopping! Plenty of places to eat and all prices but found street food by far the best. Thought it might be touristy (and it was) but Zhujiajiao water town worth the trip. Easy to get to by train for an afternoon. You can find a quiet spot to sit and sip tea on a balcony over the river.

The city is really beatiful and have so many highlights. It is a perfect 5 days trip. The only issue is that is aso crowdy because the 1st of May, domestic tourists went there for vacation and there were too many people everywhere. We do not recomend to travel during the golden weeks.

I use this hotel usually when I come to Shanghai mainly because of its location. This time I saw a highly commitment from the staff specifically from Mr. King who was super and helped me and came with me to buy medicine from a pharmacy outside the hotel. If he wasn't provide this assistance to me (which is not generally defined as his duty), I was not able to buy medicine for one of my colleagues who was suffering from cold & Flu. I thank you the management of the hotel who has justified the personnel very well.

Relatively close to the airport. Free transfer to the airport from the hotel, even in the early morning. They prepare a small breakfast to go (milk, boiled egg, some bakery), that was really nice. Staff super friendly, quite room, large and comfy bed. Good choice for a short stop over in Shanghai. Small shop at the hotel, possible to buy some basic stuff, drinks, cup noodles, shampoos etc. But otherwise there's nothing around the hotel, no shops, not cafes.

I’ve stayed at 12 Hengshan a few times before it was under the IHG umbrella - it is still the best hotel in Shanghai. The location is great (if you want an authentic Shanghai experience) and the rooms are large and comfortable. I arrived at 10am and they let me check in then! Wow this has never happened before - it saved me from having to kill time before check in of 2pm! Also the reception girls were very helpful with my internet issues!

In terms of location this is as good as it gets in Shanghai. Metro access under 2 minute walk. Direct access to Nanjing road, short distance to people square and tons of places. The rooms are comfortable although not very big. The breakfast is the best I have had in China and is well worth that of a high-end 5 star hotel. Bath and shower have strong water pressure and instant hot water.

Very good hotel: clean, light with a customer oriented staff. Large 3-lined pool available for swiming, gym could be a little larger but I haven't seen anyone there during my visits) Shanghai exhibition center is 10 minutes driving by taxi. Staff is extremely friendly and helpful, they make your staying a 5 star. I'd definitely recommend this hotel.

Location. The Bund is located at a short walk from hotel. Good restaurants offer around. It's very easy to get from Pudong Airport to the hotel by subway, simply take line 2 and get off at East Nijing Road Station (exit 6). We took the subway which is very cheap (7 Yuan per trip) carrying big bags and had no problem at all.

The location and price is the best feature of this hotel. The front desk staff can speak enough English to be helpful. There was a concierge who helped me with restaurant and taxi directions. My room was changed to one large bed when a friend could not be there. It was clean with a firm bed. The A/C worked well.
