The staff went out of their way to help us the entire stay but especially at the end making our connection to Nagano when we hadn't even stayed there the previous night. They kept our luggage overnight also and sent us off with some delicious coffees! Also special mention to the delicious food and homey decor.

This is a ryoken stya at its most authentic. Staff know where you are at all times and adjust the room based on that Private Onsen is good. It was fantastic to stay in a traditional Japanese hotel in such an amazing setting. The owner was exceptionally helpful and made our stay wonderful.

Classic japonese house, with own onsen (there is even a private one, where I could relax together with my husband). They provide yukatas, japonese shoes and even kimonos in your stay! I just loved everything! And they take you in the train station (when you are arriving and leaving). Just awsome stay! 100% recommend.

春欄の宿 さかえやは、湯田中駅から車で5分のところにある、渋温泉街の中心部に位置する旅館です。温泉（露天風呂付）、カラフルな浴衣を提供しています。温泉に入る猿がいる地獄谷野猿公園まで車で10分です。 和室のお部屋には、エアコン、衛星テレビ、セーフティボックス、冷蔵庫、専用トイレが備わります。お風呂は共用です。到着時に無料のお菓子と緑茶を進呈しています。... We were positively surprised in every aspect of our stay. Amazing room, superb staff “accueil “ , two banquets (dinner and breakfast) of incredible quality , onsen beauty, hakama (kimono shaped pieces for use be in the hotel be outside in the onsen street) quality and variety ( one for winter other for inner use ) . The private onsen was amazing but I guess any room in this place would make guests happy . It is definitely unfair to qualify it as a 3 star, it should be more .

This Ryokan was our favourite experience on our trip and one we will never forget. Every detail was unique and lovely, and every person working here is fantastic. We were picked up from Yudanaka station right as we arrived, which was so generous and good. Then once we arrived we were shown to our rooms and also served dinner by Hiro who was an exceptional host. The private onsen room we had called "Ayame" was quiet, comfortable and peaceful. Despite being surrounded by baths everywhere there was no humidity and it was fresh and cool. The rest of the private onsens throughout the ryokan were each so unique and interesting, with the larger open air baths being my favourite. You can reserve these if it's during busy times or if it's low traffic you can just go into any of them and lock the door behind you, meaning you can go as a mixed sex group or couple. If you have breakfast and dinner, these are extravagant and large multi dish meals full of variety, with everything being high quality leaving us feeling fueled and refreshed. I could go on forever about how great Kokuya is, but it's better to go there and see firsthand how amazing the building, the people and the onsen village of Shibu is! There are some things to be aware of that might be unusual for others booking who aren't used to Ryokans or Japan The tatami mat sleeping arrangements are hard, but I like this and anyone who prefers hard mattresses and sleeping on your back will enjoy them. Also note that the meals are large and varied, there is a western style breakfast available but to really enjoy this Ryokan you should be prepared to dive into Japanese Kaiseki dining with everything that it involves, from the raw fish and raw egg to the sea urchin and everything between. If you are too fussy and dislike most of the things it would be a big waste and loss for you. If you enjoy this, you will love it!

We had the best stay, the staff were so incredible and the room and hotel itself was stunning. The beds were so comfortable and it is in a fantastic location! The hotel also puts on a free bus to the station and the monkey park which is super helpful and they also have free electric bikes to use. Amazing stay.
